Zub Rub, a dub dub! Organic Skin Silkening Balm!

22 Jun

On Thursday nights, in the Summer, you’ll find me at San Carlos Art Walk selling my heylani jewelry designs!

Well… last night I saw a booth a few down from mine… looked like something I had to go check out!
Glad I did!
It was the zubrub booth… and this stuff is GREAT!
Since, it’s locally made, I had to add a little post about them on my blog!

zubrub is an organic skin and hair balm… made sustainably in NorCal with Organic Beeswax & Olive Oil, Vit E, and nummy essential oils.
~ The thing that hit me first was the smell… sooooo good… three scents; Mango, Lemongrass, and Original (Lavender)!
~ Next, I was stunned by the integrity of the bar… usually when I pick up a ‘lotion’ bar it starts to melt in my hand instantly… Not the case with zubrub! I hear it’s even been left in hot cars and hasn’t melted out of the tin!
~ Lastly, and most importantly, this stuff works like heaven on your skin! After just two applications the dry skin on the back of my hands is so silky and smells super duper! I applied it hours ago, this morning, and have washed my hands, at least, a few times… the softness and scent remains!!! Mmm! :)

I’m really impressed with this stuff and hope that you all will have a chance to try it someday!

Right now, they are selling in locally, independent boutiques and salons. Possibly natural retailers are on the horizon.
As well, you can pick up a reasonably priced tin on their site : Shop at zubrub

As always, Enjoy!   Summer is Here!

Happy 10th Anniversary! Zen Garden Nail Spa – Palo Alto, CA

27 May

Ah! 10 years of wedded bliss… Such a lovely milestone anniversary to achieve!

In honor of our anniversary, my mom and step-dad purchased a couple of luxurious Green Tea pedicures for us!

At first, Dano was basically just willing to go along for the ride… knowing that I would LOVE this kind of treatment!
Then he learned that he did NOT have to get toenail polish, hee hee, of course he already knew this!!
PLUS, he found out that he’d receive a foot massage with the deal and was keen on the idea… since he has gout, foot massages can sometimes break-up some of the gout forming crystals.

So… we set out to Zen Garden Nail Spa in Palo Alto, CA.
I’d been here before with my mom, which is how she knew about the place to begin with.

I let Dano pick my nail color… he wanted to go with Amethyst or Blue… I was changing from a purple color already, so I decided to go with a cool Blue shade… to honor the new little baby (boy) we are awaiting! ;)

I don’t regularly get pedicures… but after having been here, I might start!
They have fancy massage chairs, pretty green glass foot bowls, and wonderful treatments with foot and leg massages.
The staff is very nice and friendly!
I know Dano had a bit of a nice time… because, well… he fell asleep a number of times!!! :)
YAY!

Enjoy!

(this is probably the only time you’ll see me post a cliche’ picture of feet! Unless, I’m sinking my feet into a wonderful sandy beach!)

Madonna’s fallen out of favor with me!?!

19 Apr

Yep… it’s true… I’ve realized I’m no longer in love with Madge.

Heck No! I do not expect her to care!

More so, I’m just surprised that I finally figured it out!
Yeah, sure, my interest in her has waned much over the years… but she still remained the Big M in my book.
Until it hit me recently… I don’t like her anymore! *shrug* Sad!

Madonna’s tour will stop in the Bay Area (San Jose) in October 2012… Tickets Sold Out like wildfire… and, surprisingly, I didn’t even consider buying, only had a fleeting second of a thought in which I thought about going.
This, of course, surprised the heck out of me! I’ve gone to her last 3 concerts and am a teen of the 80’s…
more so, it surprised, and secretly delighted my husband, when I declared “Huh! I don’t think I’m interested in her newest tour!” since I would always drag him along!

YEP! I was a huge Madonna fan… Huge! What girl of the 80’s wouldn’t be!? She was a terrific ‘icon’ in her perfect disobedience! She offered us a chance to vicariously be little rebellious Madonnas, likely to the chagrin of parents everywhere.

Obviously, through the years, my musical tastes have changed, though I’d always remained faithful to Madonna. No If’s, And’s or, But’s about it… I’d always have her latest CD (sometimes buying two, the Collector’s version and the Standard Version), I knew every single word in every single one of her songs! For my 31st birthday, Dano even bought me her “SEX” book… Oh My God! That was the perfect gift ever! Well… at that time anyway! ;)

My first Madonna concert was her ReInvention tour… it was terrific… 20yrs of Madonna in the making right in front of my eyes on stage! She honored that with Madonna Classics that made me swoon! I knew all the music and was in heaven!
Next was the Confessions tour… which I loved!
This tour is my favorite of the three I’ve been to and I loved every song off the album that accompanied it.

The last tour saw was the Sticky & Sweet tour… I’d already started falling out of love with Madonna by this time. The music from the accompanying CD was good, but I was not crazy about it. And I realized I’d started skipping her station on my Pandora shuffle! For me… the memorable highlight of this concert was that it was Election Day 2008… she waited to come out on stage… when she stepped out, excited as hell, she declared, “I’m So F*cking Happy Right Now!” … we were right there with her in the excitement!

How did I fall out of love with her!?
What really happened, I think, is that I fell out of love with Madonna as a person. I was flabbergast at the way she was handling her split from Guy Ritchie… of course, I do not know either of them personally… though from interviews with both and some media reports, I feel like I started realizing that Madonna was not the person she could be!! She did not seem to be the truly spiritual and enlightened being she had worked so many years to become.

I spoke about this with a good friend… starting out the conversation by indicating that I was surprised how her divorce was turning out and how she was reacting to it. He simply said, “Are you really surprised though? It’s Madonna!”.
As if that explained everything, she IS Madonna… she DOES what she wants, she GIVES a crap what people think, yadda yadda!!
Then it hit me… and I answered him, “YES! I am surprised, given whom she seems to be with all her spiritual growth and at 50yrs old that she still acts like that!”
He didn’t have a comeback… simply nodded his head in acknowledgement.

So… I know, to some, she’s just a Musician… but I feel a certain loss over falling out of love with her. I am conflicted about not being eager to see her on her new tour (I mean if I won tickets, I wouldn’t throw them away!! Wink wink! :)

However, I think I’m done with the New and Unimproved Madonna…
I’ll keep her the way she was and I have my old beat-up CDs to prove it!

This is just what I’ve been feeling lately… and, hey, at least it pertains to the SFO area!  :)

(BTW… I have not changed allegiances… I’m not a Lady Gaga fan either! Ha ha!)

We’ve lived here a year already!?!?! Happy Birthday to me!

3 Apr

That went fast… especially since I’ve been having fun filling up on adventures for my SFO Newb blog. :)

We moved here last year (2011) within days of my birthday… we relocated because Dano got a great new gig… regardless it was not my birthday wish to leave Sunny SoCal! Though it was high on our list for him to have a stable job…

Not surprisingly… I basically cried daily for awhile after we arrived. However, I knew that truly what is important is for  Dano and me and our sweet doggies to be together and healthy… we could make a wonderful little home here if we were together… plus we were only 30 driving minutes to the City (San Francisco)… and that is so wonderful!

I’ve grown to know the area… we have friends (old and new)… and I’ve been able to locate a Jewelry Studio to work on Heylani Jewelry  pieces!!

All in all… not too bad… every once in a while I still feel like we are adjusting… the weather and beaches are no where near the same as Encinitas.

BUT… 2012 is going to be So Exciting for us… being here and close to some great places will be terrific for us!

* Note *
I’ll still be adding SFO Newb Adventures to the blog… there are lots coming up!
However, I might start adding recipes, creative projects, and other tales to my blog ;)

As alway, Enjoy!

And Thanks!!

‘Backyard’ Seals!!

11 Dec

We are fortunate enough to live on a wonderful little waterway (a creek that feeds off the SF Bay)… on a daily basis we get to see Dragonboat and Crew teams practicing along the water as they row past the view from our deck!
We also get to see many varied types of water fowl, including my favorite… Pelicans!

We’ve both been wondering if we’d ever see seals or any other type of small swimming animals… Now we know the answer… YES! :)

I think it had to get cold enough for them to venture up the creek… but we were visited by two frolicking seals twice in one week…
I was in the bedroom, the morning of Nov 14th,  looking out the window and saw them (at first I thought it might be a scuba diver… HA! Weird, right!?  Though, no stranger than actually seeing seals from your bedroom window! :)
I yelled out to Dano, in the living room, “DANO! Oh my god! Dano!”… He was concerned something was wrong and came running… but then I pointed and said “SEALS!” :)

Right away we pulled out our cameras… we are happy to share what we captured with you…

Sparky’s Hot Rod Garage

28 Aug

Sparky’s Hot Rod Garage

Recently visited this super fun ‘garage’ full of fancy, old hot rods! YAY! I was in heaven…
I *love* cars, and old cars at that, my dad is an Auto Body guy after all.

Dano really liked this place also … so so so so many great cars to look at… so so so so many great and fun memorabilia to look at!

They have an old 50′s diner, an old ‘gas’ station, a juke box, and vintage Coke machines…. and a row of pinball machines.

It’s available for Corporate and Special Events.

Why were we there?

A special event involving Celebrating the Life for our neighbor and friend, Deb.
As you all know, we’ve only lived in the Bay Area since April… but Deb, her partner Kat, and their sweet little doggies were instant friendly neighbors!

We learned that Deb was undergoing Chemo for Breast Cancer… though she always looked well and full of vibrant energy.

Sadly, a kind of infection claimed Deb’s body last month… though her energy, spirit and love lives on in her family and partnership with Kat, including a new little baby girl they had finally been able to adopt!

Deb had Triple Negative Breast Cancer… I had not heard of this strain before… so at her Life Celebration the Triple Step organization was present to education, accept donations, and honor Deb’s life.

Triple Step For the Cure

We’d never been to a Celebration of Life before, but have heard people speak about them.
It was so different than a wake after a funeral.

It was a beautiful event with gorgeous photos of Deb & Kat smiling and in such true love
… Dano and I got an opportunity to learn a bit more about who Deb was, what she liked to do, and what she was passionate about.

It was really sweet, and though people were sad, there were tender memories in their smiling faces.

I asked Dano… “What should I blog about!”

He says, “How about your work stuff?”

I look at him like, ‘you silly, you know I don’t ‘work’… and he says, “Your jewelry stuff and your shows” :)

OH! That! The love of my life job! OK! So, here goes!

Jewelry Shows :
On this past Thursday, I completed the 4th of 14 weeks at the San Carlos Art Walk! FUN! :) I am in front of Sassy Chic Boutique at 845 Laurel (Starbucks) from about 4-8pm and I display different pieces each week… cycling through my ‘From My Travels’ collection and my “When in… Home” collection. I’ve been blessed enough to sell at least one piece each week… and that is what I go in knowing… that I will get to sell something every week! :)
Additionally, on Saturday, July 19th, I’ll be sharing a booth with an Art Walk friend at an Arts & Music Festival in Half Moon Bay!

Jewelry Photoshoot :
Cia Gould is focusing on her photo projects… she put a word out on craigslist looking for jewelry artists, so that she could get some good practice on product photography! I answered the ad… and Dano and I went out yesterday for a nice couple hours of a great photoshoot!! FUN! I’m so glad I answered the ad.. and that she invited us over… I look forward to seeing the results!

L.E.G.S.! :
Cia is also working on a very interesting and great project called L.E.G.S. (Learn, Empower, Give, Support). She will be taking photos of 25 women’s legs… all decked out in what they do for a living (what they do to live!)… I suppose I’ll be “The Jeweler”… *shrug!* as I draped a few of my favorite necklaces on my leg and played model for about an hour ;) It is most difficult being a super-model… that is not an easy job for them, mind you! ;)
To go along with the project and my LEGS photo, I’ll need to write a little something about over-coming adversity or something in that vein… whew, I’m kinda’ scared about writing for that!

Out for the Support! Aids Life Cycle : Ride to End Aids

5 Jun

… we got up SO early (not typical for us to start the day at 6am!)… we stood on cement and cheered (throat sore now) and clapped (wrists aching) for about 3hrs straight… AND it was kinda’ cold out…

But guess what… We LOVED it… we were there to support our friend, David Rogers, as he and his friends, Angela & Jeffery… began their first day of seven to ride over 500 miles in a Benefit Ride to End Aids!!! This is his 3rd year riding, I’m so proud of him. If he and the many riders joining in the ride can do it… then we could certainly give them 3hrs of our time and cheers!!! :)

This was one thing that made me happy about being in the Bay Area… that Dano and I could head out to support the 2,400 riders for this event!

We had a fun time the previous weekend, as we drove along the route the riders would be taking, so that we could find just the ride spot to cheer and support from the sidelines! We ended up picking the corner of Hayne Road as it drops down towards Sawyer Camp Trail off Hwy 280… super great trail too!

It was a great day and it was a fun adventure!! :)

A bit more about David and his adventure can be found here :
